Alvin Darien II is the bestselling author, financial educator and entrepreneur. He’s the CEO and Co-Founder of Financial Pro Network, a financial education company based in Atlanta, GA. In this latest interview, Alvin shared a touching story of overcoming cancer twice, losing everything, and how he overcame all the obstacles to become one of industry’s most sought-after speaker and financial educator. 

Q: It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

A: I was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, and I graduated from Savannah State University with a degree in electrical/electronic engineering. But it wasn’t like today—an engineering degree didn’t guarantee a job back then, and I kept sending out resumes and interviewing with no luck with a career in engineering.

That’s around when I started noticing that nobody knew how money actually worked. My friends didn’t know, my family didn’t know, and I didn’t know.

What happened next was something of a miracle — my resume ended up in front of some leaders in the financial industry. They were impressed by my initiative — it’s not every day that an engineer switches careers to become a financial professional.

They nurtured my passion for teaching people about how money works. Because of their leadership, I’ve built a team that helps families, especially minorities, across the country.

Q: I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

A: I have faced my share of adversity. In my 20s I overcame cancer twice, once at 23 and again at 27. At age 30, I lost everything — I was literally down to the last $100 in my pocket. And early on I faced the grind of self-comparison and doubt that comes from social media.

I’ve had to learn that success does not come from avoiding adversity—one way or another, you’re going to face it. But with the right support and leadership, you can overcome adversity and become stronger for it.

Q: Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

A: Over the last two decades, I’ve helped thousands of families across America transform their financial futures. In the process, I’ve mentored a team of 300+ licensed financial professionals that spans 25 locations across America.

What sets me apart is that I help people create a complete legacy. There are three types of legacies you can leave—your financial legacy, your emotional legacy, and the legacy of your knowledge. Most people get specific mentors for each legacy, like a counsellor for their emotions or financial advisor for their finances. But I’ve learned that they’re all connected—overcoming adversity and growth can only happen when you address the whole person.

So that’s how I help people. I teach them how their money actually works. I help them develop the mental and emotional toughness to overcome adversity. And I give them tools and resources they can pass down to their children and grandchildren.

Q: What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

A: Learn from mistakes and failures. I get it — it’s easy to get discouraged by failure. Believe me, I’ve had more than a few! But once you realize that each of those failures are also opportunities to learn, to grow, and to reach a new level, you become wiser, more resilient, and powerful.

Another great strategy is teaching. Figuring out how to share what you know in a way that not only makes sense but is impactful is a game changer. It sharpens your communication skills, and raises your visibility—people start seeking you, instead of you seeking them.

Q: Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

A: Success to me is living the 5 F’s to the fullest — faith, family, fitness, finance, and fun. I’ve found that the people who grow in those five dimensions are the people who lead the most fulfilling lives. Again, it’s about creating a complete legacy.

Personally, I think people who keep their word, show up on time, and make no excuses are successes. They’ve achieved levels of character that few ever reach, and that’s among the greatest markers of success.

Q: What’s next for you?

A: Right now I’m focused on promoting my radio show, Retirement Refinance Radio.

My long-term vision is to guide 1,000 people to earning $1 million in business revenue, owning $1 million in life insurance, and diversifying their wealth with $1 million in real estate.

Along the way, I’m always aiming to build amazing relationships and connections with people who share visions of similar scope and a passion for helping people.
