Wildly Spaces Launches Initiative to Add Tampon Emoji to Unicode Consortium

Wildly Spaces is launching a campaign initiative to put forward the tampon emoji into the Unicode Consortium. There are hundreds of other symbols, but not one for period products. This has been an issue for years now and Wildly Spaces wants to make a statement to help normalize periods and remove period stigmas. The tampon emoji could be beneficial in closing the communication gap between people who menstruate and those who don’t by helping to create a safe space online for meaningful conversations about reproductive health. Their goal with this initiative is twofold, firstly, to break the silence around menstruation and secondly, make sure everyone knows that periods are normal and nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about.

Nowadays, emojis have become a universal language, enabling everyone to express emotions, needs, and everyday experiences. Yet, there is a glaring omission in this lexicon – the absence of an emoji that adequately represents menstruation hygiene. Susha, CEO of Wildly Spaces, believes that having an emoji dedicated to tampons would be incredibly helpful in normalizing discussions around menstrual health. This is not the first time someone has tried to propose a period product emoji, but all previous efforts have been denied by the Unicode Consortium.

For this reason, Wildly Spaces is collecting signatures to show Unicode the amount of backers that believe in the importance of the emoji. They request support by signing the petition or following their Instagram account where they encourage other organizations and individuals to join the cause.

“By supporting this proposal, we as a self-exploration audio company want to contribute  to normalizing conversations surrounding menstrual health. We strive to foster an environment that encourages open dialogue, while working towards reducing societal taboos associated with these subjects,” expressed Susha, the founder and CEO of Wildly Spaces.

The newly added emoji of a blood droplet had a similar trajectory. Plan International UK paired with NHS Blood and Transplant to submit the proposal for the droplet design with the backing of over 55,000 voters.

Wildly’s proposal stands out to previous attempts, due to its focus on the tampon’s cultural influence in American pop culture, which has had a global impact and made it a symbol of menstrual hygiene. Moreover, the tampon emoji has gained popularity in digital discourse, particularly through the TikTok movement on period health, with the hashtag #tampon accumulating over 3 billion views. This popularity highlights the ongoing conversations surrounding menstrual health. Additionally, the proposal emphasized the symbolic meanings of tampon, representing a global movement, calling for the elimination of taxes on menstrual hygiene products, often referred to as the “tampon tax” and women who defy stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding their health.

“Imagine the practical implications of having a tampon emoji at your disposal,” said Susha, “Picture a scenario where you’re caught off guard, having forgotten your hygiene products in a public restroom. A simple tampon emoji, accompanied by a question mark, can be the bridge between your needs and a solution. It’s about convenience, accessibility, and making life easier for individuals who menstruate”.
