NBA Athletes Are Being Required to Get COVID-19 Vaccines In Order to Play

The NBA is now allowing more live audiences to spectate matches in their venues, but with strict safety measures. And even though the league doesn’t obligate athletes to get the COVID-19 vaccines, the local governments in which the matches will be held have required players and the whole coaching staff to get jabbed and be fully-vaccinated first before practicing and playing for their teams.

Heading into the 2021-2022 NBA season, several fans have been wondering about the league’s stand about requiring its athletes to be fully-vaccinated to play and even train with their team.

To fully address the matter, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass, told the media that the league still wouldn’t mandate the fully-vaccinated status to their athletes in order to play. This is amidst the NBA board members’ proposal to propel its standpoint about the compulsory COVID-19 shots.

However, some of the cities in the United States, including New York and San Francisco, strictly enforce that in order to play for their teams, NBA athletes and the whole coaching staff should be fully-vaccinated. Not doing so would mean that they couldn’t participate in any sporting event in these cities and are also not entitled to their pay and other benefits.

This shouldn’t be a concern for a collapse in the upcoming NBA season as the league now has 95% of its players fully vaccinated. But for some teams, this could cause a hitch as some of their players still don’t want to get involved with the vaccines.

Brooklyn Nets’ Kyrie Irving and Golden State Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins are two of the most vocal anti-vaccination advocates in the league. Being key players for their respective lineups, it’s possible that their team strategies would be different and may cause some major adjustments. Their coaches said that they respect the city laws and would just have to fine-tune their game approach until their players get the vaccines.

Evidently, the sports world is starting to bounce back from the dicey situation last year. But since there are still protocols to follow, most fans still cannot observe these exciting matches in person.
