The launch of the product comes amid growing evidence that UVC light is highly effective at disinfecting surfaces contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).
UVC light has been extensively researched and utilized in places like hospitals to disinfect against 99.9% of viruses and bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, e. coli, tuberculosis (TB), and influenza. The technology is not new and has been in use for decades.
However, owing to the potentially harmful effects of UVC light on skin and eyes, it has not been more widely deployed in the past. The Multipass was developed to offer a safe pass-through device that can decontaminate cards, passports and documents without causing harm to users.
The new Multipass is 12 inches long and 8 inches high with a pass-through slot in the middle. The slot contains two 254nm ultraviolet light beams that irradiate the surface of anything passed through.
One of the factors in the effectiveness of UVC decontamination is the distance of the light from the surface being irradiated. The closer the light source is, the more effective it will be.
Owing to the proximity of the light beams in the Multipass, any object passed through will receive an extremely high dose of UVC light that quickly sanitizes surfaces against 99.9% of contaminants.
