Smart Aging® to Tackle Falls Prevention

Falls Prevention is a solution for a health epidemic that has long and disproportionately affected Seniors in the USA and around the world.

Smart Aging LLC, whose website is www.SmartAging.com, aims to prevent falls and significantly decrease the numbers. Historically, seniors falling has been the Number 1 reason for hospital emergency room visits and hospitalizations in the USA. In 2014, 2.8 million individuals in the USA were treated in hospitals for Fall-Related injuries, and 27,000 older adults died as a result of those falls. It is a problem with both a staggering human and health care cost that in most cases could be avoided with the right combination of actions by individuals, and not to overlook role of families and in some instances caregivers.

Almost everyone who is reading this knows at least one person personally who has been seriously injured in a fall, with hip fractures being the most common injury. Furthermore, a startling statistic is that of those over 65 who fall and break their hip, about half are dead within a year.

Over the last 30+ years, a major passion of Smart Aging’s Founder & President, Matthew Levy, has been to implement Falls Prevention programs both to address the physical aspects that would make falling less likely, as well as the lifestyle and in-home aspects that could be modified to significantly reduce the numbers of falls; see more at www.smartaging.com/falls-prevention.

Smart Aging® also sees major additional promise of prevention from a combination of education of various groups, implementing strategies to address the stigma that prevents many from acknowledging when help is needed, and introducing some new and promoting existing products to help people take more control over their mobility and personal safety. Changing peoples’ perceptions of this risk, particularly those who are most vulnerable, is one very specific goal.

Smart Aging plans to partner to varying degrees with health care providers, communications firms, product developers, insurance and other companies and all levels of government. There would be no losers with smarter approaches to motivate people to optimize their behavior and actions to mitigate risks. This is a problem that can and should be a win-win for individuals and society.

Progress can be tracked over time at www.FallsPrevention.com.
