Founder & CEO Sam Desalu explains, ”The issue of menstruation is one of the most challenging development issues amongst less fortunate women and girls all over the world. Associated with myths and misinformation that creates the misconception, that menstruation is gross, weird, and can’t be discussed publicly. Throughout Africa, women, and girls living in poverty lack access to proper hygiene products and basic facilities necessary for good menstrual hygiene management.”
Menstruation is one of the most common and uniquely female experiences. Unfortunately, the reality is that around the world millions of girls and women struggle to manage their monthly periods. Unable to afford or access proper menstrual products, many girls and women rely on crude, improvised materials like scraps of old clothing, pieces of foam mattresses, toilet paper, leaves, and banana fibers to manage their menstruations- all of which are unhygienic, ineffective, and uncomfortable.
Face with frequent, embarrassing leaks and a susceptibility to recurrent infections, the impact is that millions of girls and women experience their monthly period as something that prevents them from engaging in daily life. Whether this is going to school or work, or carrying out their normal domestic responsibilities.
Their focus is to aid women and girls in Africa, by providing reusable sanitary pads. In 2016, Desalu Naturals partnered with AFRIpads, an Uganda based company that makes quality re-usable sanitary pads.
”We’ve given out re-usable pads in Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia, so far. Our goal is to give them out all over Africa,” Sam added.
Desalu Naturals’ humble beginnings happened unintentionally. While volunteering in Kampala, Uganda in 2016, Sam witnessed the hardships faced by women and young girls who could not afford the proper hygiene products when they started their menstrual cycles. His solution to the problem was simple, to create a for-profit business that was sustainable and not reliant on donations. Sam’s, God-given vision soon turned into a business idea that provided a powerful foundation for Desalu Naturals.
